Limerick Day

Special Days
Karen Kelly

Event details

This event began 12/05/20 and repeats every year forever

Today celebrates the birthday of artist and writer Edward Lear. Lear, who was born in 1812, was all about a bit of fun and wrote his ‘Book of Nonsense’ of 72 limericks in 1846 with exactly that in mind. The book was a huge success, not only making the author popular, but also boosting the limerick into popular culture across the world.

There was a young woman named Bright,
Whose speed was much faster than light.
She set out one day,
In a relative way,
And returned on the previous night.

There was a young girl of Cape Cod
Who thought babies were fashioned by God,
But ’twas not the Almighty Who hiked up her nightie –
‘Twas Roger, the lodger, by God!
